Teeth whitening has become extremely popular of late due to the simple reason that it helps you in improving your smile. Well, it’s a smile that speaks volumes without even uttering a single word. Having a bright, white smile is an esthetic necessity these days, and that has led to the increasing trend of teeth whitening.
While brushing your teeth and flossing regular are the basic ways of maintaining your oral health and hygiene, these methods do not ensure dental whiteness. In order to whiten you teeth you need something more than just brushing with whitening toothpaste. That is what makes teeth whitening so effective.
Teeth whitening treatments are the best for removing stains and spots from the surface of your teeth to give you an enhanced smile. These procedures are now available at almost all the cosmetic dental offices and salons in the state, and are the most commonly requested procedures too.
What is Teeth Whitening All About?
Well, it’s about bleaching your teeth to improve the color. Bleaching however, does not mean that you are exposingyour teeth to harsh chemicals; it is done through effective chemicals and bleaching agents that whiten your teeth and are gentle on the surface.
There are two basic types of teeth whitening – in-office teeth whitening and at-home teeth whitening.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
This method, as the name suggests, is carried out in the dental office. It is a 60 minutes program during which your teeth will be isolated from you gums and shielded with rubber molds to protect them. The teeth are then painted with whitening gel, usually composed of peroxide (either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). After applying the peroxide gel all over the teeth properly, a laser beam is lighted and the teeth are exposed to the beam for best results. This procedure is repeated thrice, divided into 15 minute sessions.
The in-office teeth whitening procedure usually produces results instantly, and are therefore the most preferred choice; however, these are expensive treatments and can cost you up to $500 for one session.
whitening procedures, on the other hand, are to be carried out by the user himself at home. Usually the dentist takes the impression of the mouth to prepare custom-fit trays. These trays are filled with whitening gel and worn for an hour everyday until the desired results manifests.
Usually, this method of teeth whitening can take up to 14 days to give you the result. However, it is less expensive when compared to in-office teeth whitening treatment.
Safety Concerns
Well, teeth whitening treatments are considered to be safe, despite the use of bleaching agent. The beach used for whitening is usually mild on the teeth and least abrasive, however, if it reaches the gum or the soft tissues by any chance, it can cause irritation and sores.
Proper care must be taken during the procedure to avoid the gel from reaching the gums.
Teeth whitening is otherwise safe and very effective, and the results usually last long. You can now smile more often!
